Trust me, I know broke - and I know it well - and if you're fortunate enough to be able to see this on your screen, I can assure you that you can get involved. Weekend SCCA memberships are inexpensive and in most jurisdictions a yearly membership will get you your first event free. For those who just want to try it once, weekend memberships and entry typically run around $50 (although this may vary up or down).

Okay, Okay - that was short sighted of me. Plenty of enthusiasts don't have a car for one reason or another, but not all is lost. This is most definitely a spectator sport, more so than an AutoX event. Fancy seeing an diverse group of cars sliding sideways through dirt? This is you're show - and it's free. Better yet (most) people are more than willing to offer ride alongs if you ask, and if you ask the right person you could be the one of the fastest people around the track. Don't have a snell-rated helmet? No problem, most clubs will have loaner helmets available both for spectator ride-alongs and competitors that don't own one.

For some reason I think this catches a lot of people up. The principal objective of grassroots motorsports is to get everyone involved. For every prepared vehicle that rolls in on a trailer there is something on the other end of the spectrum. For example a near stock honda civic was among the fastest times of the day. A Chevy Cavalier was highly competitive. As for me? Mid pack, and guess what? I couldn't care less because I was smiling so hard it hurt. I've owned so many cars that could have been epic - 93 Camry, 96 Buick Regal, 99 Taurus - but never got involved in any form of motorsport because I thought they would be useless. There are others on here that can attest, racing what you have can be, and is, extremely rewarding. REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE OF SLOW CAR FAST . As a matter of fact this Cavalier was the 2nd fastest FWD car and 12th overall on the day, beating a considerable number of prepped AWD cars. Unlike a lot of motorsports rallycross is more about the skill of the driver than the depth of ones wallet, and you can truly "run what ya brung" and be competitive.

SERIOUSLY, WHAT ABOUT MY POOR CAR!?

While this is a semi-valid concern, and you will certainly be putting more stress on your car than normal daily driving, don't let this scare you off either. In all honesty this location (all will be different, obviously) felt no worse than driving over semi-broken pavement in one or two spots and overwhelmingly the course was as smooth as driving on, well, loose dirt and loamy soil. I experienced far more bone-jarring impacts on the street than I did during this event. Organizers are reasonable too - if you see something you think will be a problem, point it out on the course walk and in most cases valid concerns will be corrected. There was a range of cars there from home-built rally beaters to newer cars in immaculate condition. Runs are made with windows up, and besides a little dirt in the floorboards the interior is no worse for wear.

BUT I WON'T BE ABLE TO DRIFT MY FWD ECONOBOX!!

Don't worry, you're FWD car will drift with a bit of coaxing and 40psi in the rear tires (check out 00:55 and on).

So, take a break from watching !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of us Southerners struggling to drive up icy grades - and take a second to look up a local event. Whether its Auto X, Rally X, HPDE, Time Attack, or Drift - there is a form of motorsports for every skill level, budget and interest and its probably closer to you than you think. When it comes to smiles per dollar, rallycross is a clear winner in my eyes.

I plan on doing rallycross this spring at Summit Point. Not in the 240z, I'll be taking my SVT Focus. I just need to install my new suspension bits and do some other maintenance but it's too damn cold outside right now.

Its not for everyone, but I was surprised at how little dirt stuck around. Dealing with the snow now down here in TN my car got twice as nasty from the salted roads. Plus dirt isnt corrosive!

Yeah, we don't have salt here... and most of our rally crosses are muddy with gravel in them so I get paint dings or the fine dust that filters inside and covers everything and fills the vents.

Autocross is the same thing, but on asphalt. I just autocross decent cars, rally cross clunkers, and one of these days I'll give up and setup myself a rally car... even though I keep saying I don't want one.

I do both consistantly, but I feel like rally x is a bit more about the driver than ones wheel/tire/suspension budget. I really enjoy both, but I'm willing to bet some rally x would better your solo times.

It doesn't translate well. I have done quite a bit of rally cross and in seasons where I am actively doing both I see no real difference. The vehicle dynamics are radically different with the reduced traction, methods are different, and vehicle prep is different. The driver is just as important in autocross (not sure how you would think otherwise unless you were running SP or another heavily modified group), the difference is that it's more exact and reproducible.

Of course I enjoy rally x because there really isn't a gross display of power penalty for the corners I just get pissed off at.

Ha ha technically I only have 50% of the car I need. I can't anything my xB (06). My wife's Aveo hatchback is fine though.

Which brings me to my interesting point; I actually hooned that last weekend. She hadn't driven it because of snow, so I took it out to get it some exercise. It slides much easier than my Scion, but it can also be controlled. If I stripped everything out of that, put in some seats, and maybe a cage, that right there would be an insane rallycross car.

My local SCCA never did rallycross, but I just Googled again and apparently they've started! Now I just have to wait 7 weeks until the next event. The local site is over an hour away, but they only do 3 events a year, so it's not a huge strain.

I'm almost definitely doing it. Thank you, sir or madam, for showing me the light.

I would completely agree. Rally x takes a little bit of the precision requirement out and lets you have fun while being competitive. A loss of traction can actually be helpful in Rally x where as it's almost always a time loss and sometimes a penalty in Auto x.

I have been quite competitive in just random clunkers in both rally x and autocross. Just depends on what class you are in.

Chattanooga. The new site at I75 motorsports park is awsome, seems easy on the cars - its fast and a ton of space. It was previously graded for a dragstrip so its purrrrfect. Come down to the one on the 16th and at least grab a couple rides!

Chattanooga (crscca.org) and Knoxville (etrscca.org) both have solo events (should offset so you can run bith clubs) and the ETR group runs the auto x events. Nashville also has a club but I'm less familiar with them.

Nicely done! I would also add that the vast majority of people at rallycross events are easy to approach and always willing to lend a hand and/or advice. There are also a good amount of websites dedicated to the sport, such as blogs , dirtyimpreza (no you don't have to have a Subaru), and rallyanarchy to name a few. There are detailed builds and advice for all kinds of vehicles out there. Thanks for making the effort to spread the word!

Indeed, do you think you can learn as much from rally X as auto X? Also, do you think the Z would be competitive for rally X? I know due to its weight it has a hard time being a serious competitor in auto X due to the classes it has to run. Either way I'll just be doing it all for fun and to learn, but just curious :)

Look here boys and Girls no excuses .. I took the Classic to a Rally X and won my very first event . .. Went out with no intentions of winning or being competitive at all .. well at lunch time I figured I had a chance and made the most of it by the end of the day I was the winner of the prepared RWD Class.

I would say so, the 'loose' traits of the car will be exxagerated and it really shows how the car will react. Since those have a factoty lsd (right?) It should hook up just fine and be quite a handful. If you have winter tires throw those on - a lot of people run them!

Very good read. Thanks for highlighting the great fun that RX is. I did AutoX for 30 plus years. The last year I won my season and a friend took me to a RX. I never went back to pavement. Now I do Ice and dirt with non-scca groups in the upper Midwest. Since most of our SCCA groups don't do RX we have three indy groups that do. w-a-g.org, statelinerallycross.com and indianarallycross.com if you are in the Midwest looking for a group and can't find SCCA near by check out these groups.

SCCA RX Classes are not the same as SCCA AX. The Stock class is easy to run in but make sure you know the rules or you can get bumped into faster class. Also keep in mind Rally started off as a RWD and FWD sport. Plus AWD classes are harder to win since there are often many more cars in that class vs FWD or RWD. Understanding the car classes before buying or modding a car is best.

2wd cars are more "momentum machines" and require that you carry speed wherever possible. I think its a bit more of a challenge, although the 4wd classes are hotly contested.

There is a roll center calculation they use to determine if a "truck" or high CG vehicle is eligible to participate (based on height/width/weight etc). The Subie would be great, but the wrangler would be more interesting. A roll cage is not required, but a hard top is. So for some reason a hard top miata without a rollbar is allowed but a caged soft top miata is not. Not sure why.

I feel the same way, but I am going to invest in solo and the dirt - really interested in doing some of the hillclimbs and other nonsense that the SCCA offers down the road!

While, yes, this will wear certain parts of a car quicker than daily driving on nicely paved roads, I have seen nothing that would indicate that this is harder on a car than driving on a dirt road (something many people in rural areas do anyway). If you live up north where they see snow - forget it! Street driving on pot-hole ridden, salt/grit covered roads and/or in the snow is far FAR more taxing and risky than rally-crossing. If you keep up with general maintenance, you have nothing to worry about.

No, i don't believe that. I know plenty of people who do rallycross and i'm a big fan but they wouldn't tell anyone to rallycross with a DD, a winter beater sure. Taking risks on a DD isn't something wise at unless you can afford it.

Okay, well that is valid, but then - autocross, HPDE's, drag racing etc are all out of the question. But this is really a fact with any motorsport. If you want to get involved but don't have the budget for multiple vehicles you have to take some risks. Tons of people do it, being able to fix everything yourself mitigates most of the costs. You just have to be reasonable with your expectations and be ready to fix whatever breaks without crying about it. This is true for most things in life.

That's true but most people aren't up for that. People want guilt/worry free play time, Motorsports isn't for everyone.

Definately, but all of that is implied. As is spirited driving on the street which is much, much more dangerous and irresponible. If your into 'preserving' every wear-and-tear part on your car, hang out in Sonic parkinglots or check out cars and coffee. I would assume anyone interested in actually participating would be fully aware of the risks - but again there are risks driving to and from starbucks. Arguably more when someone in an uninsured RHD 240 plows into you or some douchebro in a viper takes out a line of cars. Risks are everywhere, its up to you to pick and chose which ones are worth taking.
